Each version is scored against its own norms. A percentile from the 300 and a percentile from the 120 are not two measurements of different things, but they are computed from different samples, so small differences between them are expected.

How much precision the short form gives up

Reliability here is Cronbach's alpha, computed from the same open datasets our percentile tables come from. Read it as consistency: how much the questions inside one scale agree with each other. Higher means the number moves less when you answer on a different day.

At the domain level the gap is small, because a domain is still built from sixty or twenty-four answers. Both versions land where psychometrics calls a scale strong, and for the five headline numbers the short form loses very little.

This is where the two versions really part. A facet built from ten answers holds together noticeably better than one built from four, and that difference shows up as wider uncertainty around each individual facet percentile in the short form.

Alphas are computed from Johnson's open datasets, the same source as our norms. They describe people who took the inventory online, not the general population.

The short version lives inside the long one

The 120 is not a different questionnaire. Every one of its statements is also in the 300, picked by the author as the four best markers of each facet.

That is why you cannot take one and then take the other for a fresh opinion: the second reading would repeat questions you have already answered. It is also why the two profiles usually look alike, and why a large disagreement between them is worth a second look rather than a shrug.

Thirty columns are the facets, ten rows are the questions each facet gets in the full version. The highlighted rows are the four that make up the short form.

What you give up and what you keep

  • precision on individual facets: a borderline facet can land a few percentiles either way;
  • confidence in the fine contrasts inside a domain, where two facets sit close together;
  • some of the stability across repeat takes, since fewer answers leave more room for the mood of the day.

  • comparison against a group chosen by your sex and age, not a single average;
  • the same interpretations, the same result page, and the same extended access if you choose to open it.

Can you take both, and how to read a disagreement

You can, and the interesting part is the comparison rather than either result on its own. Leave time between them: a few weeks is enough for the day's mood to stop carrying over, and answers you still remember are not independent ones.

Expect small differences everywhere. A facet moving five or ten percentiles between versions is ordinary measurement noise, especially on the short form, and it does not mean one of the two is wrong.

A gap of thirty percentiles or more on the same facet is worth reading twice. Usually the explanation is human rather than statistical: a rushed session, a rough week, or a question understood differently the second time. When two readings disagree that loudly, the full version is the one to trust.

Questions people ask before choosing

Is the 120 a demo version of the 300?
No. It is a published short form of the same inventory, with its own norm tables, and it reports all thirty facets. Nothing on the result page is locked because you chose the short one.
Which one is more accurate?
The 300, and the difference sits at the facet level rather than at the domain level. If you plan to read your facets closely, that is the version to take.
Can I stop halfway and come back?
Yes. Your answers stay in your browser while you go, so you can close the tab and return to the same question. This is what makes the long version manageable for most people.
Do the two versions use the same norms?
No, each has its own tables, computed from its own dataset of past respondents. That is the correct way to do it: a raw sum out of 300 answers cannot be compared against a distribution built from 120.
I already took the short one. Is it worth doing the long one?
If the facets mattered to you, yes. The extra questions mostly buy precision exactly where the short form is weakest, and you keep both results side by side in your account.
