IPIP-NEO

Terms of Use

These are the rules for using this site. They are short on purpose: the test is free, the result is yours, and the few things worth agreeing on in advance are set out below.

Updated July 30, 2026Version 1.0

1. What this document covers

This site lets you take the IPIP-NEO personality inventory, see your profile across the five domains and thirty facets, compare it against percentile norms, and optionally buy a written report about that profile.

By using the site you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, the honest answer is not to use the site. The operator is the person named in the details at the end of this page.

How your data is handled is a separate document: see the Privacy Policy.

2. What is free and what is paid

Taking either version of the test and seeing your base result costs nothing, needs no account, and carries no hidden step where the result gets locked.

What is paid for is extended access to that same result: one payment opens the closed sections built from your answers and adds a written analysis of your profile. What it includes and what it costs are shown before you pay, and the conditions of that purchase, including refunds, live in a separate document on the sale.

An account is optional. It exists to keep a history of your results in one place, not to unlock anything.

3. What the result is not

The test measures ordinary personality traits in ordinary people. It is a self-report questionnaire, not a diagnosis.

It is not a medical or psychiatric instrument and says nothing about disorders. It is not a clinical assessment, and it does not replace a conversation with a doctor or a psychologist.

It is also not a selection tool. Do not use these results to hire, fire, admit, reject, or evaluate another person. The norms and the instrument were not built for that, and a self-report questionnaire is trivially easy to answer strategically when something is at stake.

Decisions you make about your own life after reading the result are yours.

The IPIP-NEO is not the NEO PI-R. It is an independent public-domain instrument and is neither affiliated with nor endorsed by the publishers of commercial inventories. Trademarks belong to their owners.

4. Where the material comes from

The items come from the International Personality Item Pool assembled by Lewis R. Goldberg and colleagues, and from the IPIP-NEO inventories built from that pool by John A. Johnson. Both are in the public domain, which is what makes a free test with real facets possible at all.

The percentile norms are computed from the open datasets published by the author of the inventories. Which comparison group applies to you depends on the sex and age you gave.

The English items are reproduced as written, because the norms are only valid for the original wording. Translations of the items into other languages are ours and unofficial, and scoring always runs on the English original rather than on a translation.

Everything else on this site, meaning the texts, the interpretations, the illustrations, the layout and the code, was made by us and belongs to us.

5. Your account

An account needs a working email address and a password. Keep the password to yourself: anyone who has it has your history.

One account is meant for one person. Tell us if you think someone else got into yours, and we will help you close it or change the address.

You can ask us to delete the account together with the data attached to it, and we will do that. We can suspend an account that is used to attack the site, to bypass payment, or to harm other people.

7. How the site may be used

Use it the way a person uses a site. What we ask you not to do is short and unsurprising:

  • Do not try to break the site, overload it, or get around the limits that keep it working for everyone.
  • Do not bulk-download the questions, the interpretations or the reports, whether by hand or by script, and do not republish them as your own material.
  • Do not try to obtain a paid report without paying for it, and do not resell one as a product of your own.
  • Do not use the site to process other people's data without their knowledge.

Search engines and their crawlers are welcome within the rules published in our robots file.

8. Rights to the content

The public-domain material stays public domain: the item pool and the inventories built from it are free for anyone, including you.

Our own work is not. The texts, the trait descriptions, the visual design, the illustrations and the code are ours, and copying them wholesale onto another site is not allowed. Quoting a passage with a link back is fine and welcome.

The written report you buy is yours to keep, read, print and show. What you cannot do is republish it as a template or resell it as a service.

9. What we do and do not promise

We promise that the test is scored honestly, that the norms are the ones we describe, and that a purchased report is generated and delivered to you.

We do not promise that the site is available without interruption. It can go down, be updated, or change. If a purchased report fails to generate, the conditions of the purchase describe what happens next.

The site is provided as it is. We are not liable for decisions you make on the basis of a result, for how someone else reads a link you sent them, or for losses that follow from using the site, to the extent the law allows us to say so. Where the law does not allow such an exclusion, our liability is limited to the amount you paid us.

10. Changes, law and language

The date and version of the current text are shown at the top of this page. When we change something that matters, we raise the version and update the date instead of replacing the text quietly.

These terms are governed by the law of the country where the operator is established. This does not deprive a consumer of the protection of the mandatory rules of their own country of residence.

The document is published in every language the site speaks. The translations are provided for convenience, and where a translation and the English text disagree, the English text is the one that applies.
